Also, bringing back Solomon Lane as a second antagonist was a mistake - he had his film already and stole screen time from August Walker, who was a more interesting antagonist for Ethan.

  • Plot was cluttered with too many people and 'twists' where there's no logical way for people to plan ahead like they do due to the amount of confounding factors in play at the same time.
  • The end of it is good though with a 'fun' villain death.

Worst was the helicopter one for me - it just cut between Henry Cavill firing a gun angrily in a helicopter, Tom Cruise grimacing in another helicopter and wide, incoherent shots of helicopters spiraling around in the sky. Also nice pacing with tense moments, comedy and surprises. Nice clean shots, good sense of framing with the camera angles and staged in way that made it intense without becoming confusing. Fight scene in the bathroom was probably the best action scene. That'd made a great ending of a franchise even. I would have loved to see him lose his values in that sequel and have him crawl his way back out of the hole. In fact an ending where Ethan never got to the trigger on time would have made for a more tasty sequel.

I think the movie would have been a 10/10 if only it stayed true to its title: Fallout. Again and again, Ethan has been a victim of this, yet he's always been the same, always climbing back up and reaching the trigger on time. That sometimes the system you sacrifice for turns on you and abandons you. Hence it is only befitting that his doctrines, though pessimistic and perhaps insane, hold some truths. His character doesn't come off as the irrational psychotic villain, instead he is portrayed to be a high functioning, rational psychopath. Lane should have won, maybe not totally but to a degree he should have been right. I think this would have been a great way for the writer or director to say "yes Ethan is a great guy but his goodness comes with consequences which he cannot escape." The fact that the movie ended with Ethan triumphing over Lane kinda lessens the significance of Julia's character buildup. It would have been interesting in my opinion to have had Ethan lose by not saving the only person he cared about - Julia. Therefore, I think it deserved a grim/dark ending which every plot & dialgoue constantly instigated throughout the movie. And Lane's character reminded me of the Joker as his every move/plan is to break Ethan. It gave him more depth that we've ever seen. I liked the values that were explored in Ethan, relating to the 'kill one to save many' philosophy. It was a ravaging 2 hour movie that constantly forces you to expect anything (even Ethan being a villain). The action and emotional stakes in this movie was unmatched and unprecedented. This film could never be nominated for Best Picture but it should! It does everything right. This set the bar high and the more I reflect on this I do believe this is one of the best action films of all time.

This film is miles ahead of assembly line action crap we get in abundance every year. I can't explain the importance and spectacularity of the real stunts, real effects, and camera work. Making this film stakes exciting, serious, and important that I'd say 95% of action films can't capture. Showing the stakes and the affect on the world for Ethans and IMF actions, felt real, serious, heavy, and deep. Ving Rhames emotional speech about Ethan to Ilsa.Īnd the cops massacre in Ethan head before actually capturing Lane gave me Dark Knight vibes, especially with the scoring! Solomon Lane redeemed himself to be up there with Owen Davian (PSH) as Villian.Įvery character gets their moment. This is the extraordinary story telling I love: fast paced, smart, treats the audience like adults, and enthralling the entire 150 minutes. A tier 1 film, with tier 1 sets, tier 1 action/stunts, tier 1 actors, and tier 1 camera work.
